It is difficult to express the feelings associated with this – the layers of joy being allowed into the world of someone you respect at a professional level, with the deeply personal aspects of the music and traditions of their heritage. Everything about that night was perfect and synchronous. Stories on the train about having just been at the Fado radio station in Portugal, an academic paper on Fado changing hands, a discussion and tour around part of the city only a someone who lived there would know, a ginjinha in a tiny drinking spot, and then at the restaurant being served by the lovely wife of the proprietor, realizing only later that she also possessed a powerfully beautiful voice. The singers, standing in the door way, waiting patiently for the right moment to step forward, in the meanwhile listening with attention to their colleagues’ voices. The audience not separated from the performance, but a part of it. Feeling that the community of scholars around me is also deeply passionate about life, not simply our professions. The open collars of the men, the bravado, singing back and forth to each other, challenging, its own form of unison. The proprietor’s wife reminding me of my own, at home, a dancer, an academic, a cook, the mother of my children. Zeno Franconoreply@blogger.com
